Borders and Bonds: Finland and Catalonia in Comparative Perspective
Barcelona 17 December 2010
Catalonia and Finland are two culturally distinct countries with diverse social and political characteristics but similar aspirations and, above all, a shared interest in learning from each other’s experiences. Aware of this interest, the Institut Ramon Llull wishes to promote dialogue among experts and institutions in both countries. For this purpose, a Catalan-Finnish work shop will be organised at the Institut Barcelona d’estudis Internacionals (IBEI) in December 2010. This work shop will be followed by another joint meeting in Helsinki in 2011.

"The State of Power and Democracy in Europe: Comparative Perspectives"
Seminar in co-operation with The Academy of Finland & The Royal Flemish Academy for Science and the Arts of Belgium, 26 November 2009, Brussels
The European Union, globalisation and cultural diversification have combined to change the power structures of European societies and have had a significant impact on citizens’ everyday life. Changes in the structures and networks of power in Europe create a need for a forum in which scholars, policymakers and other stakeholders can exchange ideas on the state of power and democracy in today’s Europe. In this seminar, scholars from Belgium, Finland and the Netherlands offer varying perspectives on the “behaviour” of power in Europe. Who exactly occupy the seats of power in European societies?
