Activities arranged by co-ordination
Internal events
- Opening seminar of the programme 3.-4.3.2005 in Joensuu. 25 researchers and project leaders of each project participated. Each project was introduced as a whole. In addition research themes and researchers were introduced.
- Annual seminar 30.-31.10.2008. 27 researchers or project leaders participated. The initial results of each project were presented and the participants discussed the synthesis of the programme.
Open scientific events
- Issues in Green Democracy 24.-25.11.2005, Turku together with the YHYS (the Finnish Society for Environmental Social Science). The international conference included the following working groups related to the Environment and Law Research Programme: 1) Biodiversity, markets, and democracy; 2) Dynamics between environmental management and policy practices at the local level; 3) Global environmental governance - Legitimacy in process and outcome?; 4) Policy instruments for environmental governance: Policy process, instrument choice and implementation; 5) Principles of environmental law and conception of justice.
- Current Issues in Environmental Law "EU Environmental law - a national challenge" 24.3.2006 together with the University of Joensuu, Department of law and the North Carelia Environment Centre (In Finnish). Presentations were given by the following programme researchers Anne Kumpula (EMLE), Kai Kokko (FORBID), Ismo Pölönen (EFEIA) and Leila Suvantola (coordination secretary, LEG). 90 participants.
- Shadow defence of doctoral dissertation 25.3.2006 together with the University of Joensuu department of law (In Finnish). Doctoral dissertations published in environmental law or related fields in the past 2 years were examined: Anne Kumpula: Ympäristö oikeutena, Harri Kalimo: Recycling electronics: at the crossroads of contemporary environmental and free trade law, Matti Hepola: Oikeusvoimaopin transformaatio, Elina Pirjatanniemi: Vihertyvä rikosoikeus ja Jari Salila: Metsäalueen oikeudellisesta asemasta. 40 participants.
- 4.-5.9.2006 "Kova laki" V researcher and post graduate meeting - together with the University of Helsinki Faculty of Law and the national graduate school in law OMY II. Environment and law working group (In Finnish). 20 participants.
- 12.-13.10.2006 Methods of multidisiplinary environmental research. Together with the TUK-research programme of METLA (In Finnish). 50 participants.
- 23.3.2007 Current Issues in Environmental Law "Forest law in Change" together with the University of Joensuu, Department of law and the North Carelia Environment Centre (In Finnish). 126 participants.
- 24.3.2007 General doctrines of environmental law seminar I, together with the University of Joensuu Department of Law (In Finnish). 62 participants.
- 13.6.2007 The Environment, society and law - the current status and future of social and legal environmental research from the prespective of endusers (morning session in English, afternoon in Finnish). 16 project leaders and researchers and 27 enduser representatives.
- 15.-17.8.2007 Comparative Environmental Law and Policy – Case Studies and Methodological Perspectives together with Nordic Environmental Law Network, SYKE and OMY (in English). 49 researchers from Finland(31), Sweden (7), Denmark (6), Norway (2), Estonia, the Netherlands and Iceland.
- 12.-13.11.2007 Environmental law as social science, togehter with YLKÄ (in Finnish). 48 researchers.
- 10.4.2008 Current issues in environmental law (water law), togehter with the University of Joensuu, Department of law and the North Carelia Environment Centre (In Finnish). 126 participants.

Ismo Pölönen "Ympäristövaikutusten arviointimenettely – Tutkimus YVA-menettelyn oikeudellisesta asemasta ja kehittämistarpeista ympäristöllisen vaikuttavuuden näkökulmasta", Leila Suvantola "Huominen ei koskaan kuole – Luonnonsuojelun ja ympäristönkäytön kilpailutilanteiden ratkaisemisesta", Jukka Similä "Regulating industrial pollution: The case of Finland" and Casper Herler "Markföroreningsansvaret - om retroaktivitet och skälighet av miljörättsligt återställandeansvar". Also other related doctorate dissertations were introduced. 41 participants.
