Environment and Law, ENVLAW (2005-2008)

The aims of the Environment and Law Research Programme were to strengthen research on the legal and social systems and practices concerning the environment and natural resources; to promote and deepen multidisciplinary research approaches in studies of environmental law; and to support and generate national and international networks of cooperation between universities, research institutes and different disciplines.

Themes
The research projects shared common themes such as

  • effectiveness of environmental instruments,
  • public participation in environmental decision-making,
  • management of environmental conflicts and
  • changing instruments of environmental governance.


The Research Programme was run by the Research Council for Culture and Society while the the Research Council for Biosciences and Environment and the Research Council for Natural Sciences and Engineering participated in the programme.

Extent
In total there were 45 researchers of environmental law, private law, environmental economy, environmental policy, environmental sociology, environmental philosophy and forestry working in seven different research projects.

Funding
The total funding of the programme was EUR 2.5 million.

2005-2008

Evaluation Report
Evaluation report has been published in Academy of Finland´s publication series (11/09 Environment and Law Research Programme. Evaluation Report).

Coordination
The Reseach Programme was co-ordinated by coordinator Tapio Määttä, University of Joensuu, Department of Law.
