European University Institute

The European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy, is run jointly by EU Member States. The EUI arranges postgraduate training and awards research grants to postdoctoral researchers. The EUI has four departments: History and Civilization, Economics, Law, and Political and Social Sciences.

The language of instruction within the four-year doctoral programme is normally English, in some programmes French. The EUI has changed over to electronic application processing. Applications for EUI doctoral programmes shall be submitted by the end of January.

Candidates for the programme are shortlisted by the EUI together with the Academy of Finland. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview in Florence in April. The EUI Entrance Board will make the final decision in May.

The Academy of Finland supports graduate students who from the very start complete their doctorate at the EUI. Graduate students admitted to the EUI's doctoral programme apply an EUI-grant from the Academy of Finland. The yearly grant awarded is 23,100 euros (1,825 euros per month, incl. MELA social insurance payment), if the researcher is not receiving any other funding. If the researcher has under-age children, the grant is 27,900 euros (2,325 euros per month, incl. MELA social insurance payment). The researcher's and accompanying family members' travel costs are also remunerated.

Detailed information on EUI doctoral programmes and the application procedure is available on the EUI website.
