European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), established in 1974, is an international research organisation supported by 16 member states. Finland has been a member since 1984. EMBL conducts cutting-edge biological research in its five facilities: the main laboratory is located in Heidelberg and outstations in Hamburg (Germany), Grenoble (France) and Hinxton (UK) as well as the external research programme in Monterotondo (Italy).
EMBL works to solve key biological research problems by combining in a new way the state-of-the-art methods of biosciences. The main laboratory focuses on research in structural biology, cell biology, developmental biology, gene expression and molecular biology as well as on the development of research methods and equipment. Hamburg and Grenoble carry out research in structural biology benefiting from the international or national synchrotron facilities located near-by. Hinxton (European Bioinformatics Institute, EBI) has focused on services and research in bioinformatics. The EMBL Monterotondo campus includes several research programmes and infrastructures related to research into transgenic and gene knockout mice.
