ERASysBio

The Academy of Finland took part in the second call for ERASysBio (PLUS). The call was part of the Academy's Research Programme for Computational Sciences. More information on this call and the projects is available at www.erasysbio.net.

ERASysBio – Towards a European Research Area for Systems Biology is a network of European research funding agencies with the aim of supporting the establishment of the European Research Area in the field of systems biology. With the advancement of computer technology and the success of high-throughput research in life sciences, the in silico modelling of complex biological processes has become a distinct scientific vision. In the next decades, systems biology will contribute to new key enabling technologies in bioindustry that will give rise to more individualised and multi-component biomedicines, computer-aided drug screening, more sophisticated animal and plant breeding programmes, etc.

The aim is to:

  • improve the transdisciplinary convergence of national research programmes (or programme parts) in systems and computational biology, (bio)mathematics, IT and systems sciences, bioengineering and other systems biology-related fields by means of sustainable coordination and cooperation
  • stimulate a continual and intensive communication of the leading funding bodies in systems biology-relevant areas as well as other relevant stakeholders (scientific associations, industrial associations, innovation centres, etc.)
  • target measures to create an internal market for systems biology with transnational mobility and exchange of knowledge, more mobile human resources and transnational technology transfer
  • define a European Systems Biology Research Agenda as part of a coherent European research policy.
