CoE in Smart Radios and Wireless Research

The CoE conducts high-level research and training in radio science and engineering and wireless telecommunications.

Major areas of research include high frequency, microwave and millimetre wave engineering, multi-antenna systems, multi-standard radios, the design of integrated circuits for data communications and signal processing in wireless telecommunications.

Research aims
Current areas of research at the CoE range from the electromagnetic modelling of man-made materials and telecommunications theory to signal processing algorithms, antenna and circuit design and the development of radio measurement technology and prototype radio systems.

Intelligent multi-antenna systems allow for the more efficient use of the radio spectrum. Intelligent radio sensors and millimetre wave cameras are used among other things to improve the efficiency and safety of passenger and freight transport and the performance of industrial processes.

CoE organisation
The CoE is headed by Professor of Radio Engineering Antti Räisänen, who has charge of the Radio Laboratory at Helsinki University of Technology (HUT). Professor Räisänen is also chair of the Scientific Council for Electrical and Telecommunications Engineering, member of the HUT PhD thesis committee, and board member of the MilliLab research institute, which is a joint venture between HUT and VTT Finland.

The CoE is based at the HUT Department of Electrical and Communications Engineering and consists of three research teams in radio technology, one in signal processing and one in electronic circuit design technology. The CoE has a staff of around 90. Some 30 have a PhD degree, and around 40 are writing their dissertation.

All research at the CoE is done in close collaboration with the wireless telecommunications and technology industry. The CoE is thus closely involved in developing Finnish society and in maintaining the competitiveness of the national economy.

The unit also had Academy of Finland CoE status during the previous term in 2002–2007.
