The research unit is concerned to study naturally occurring microbes (bacteria, fungi) that produce bioactive substances for use in the processing of natural raw materials (forest industry, foodstuffs), as research reagents and as raw materials for medicines. The microbe production mechanisms are analysed so that the components of these 'machineries' (enzymes, genes) can be applied in the production of useful materials and as components in the development of new materials. In addition the research unit is interested in studying the occurrence of toxins and their producer-microbes in foodstuffs and production plants, in waterways, in fodder and in the soil. The unit is also working to develop diagnostic tools and methods that can help reduce and prevent human exposure to toxins.
