Specification of the September 2012 call for applications:  Research Council for Biosciences and Environment, research posts as Postdoctoral Researcher

17 Aug 2012

In the September 2012 call for applications, it is stated in connection with research posts as Postdoctoral Researcher (p. 44): “In the September 2012 call, the Research Council for Biosciences and Environment particularly welcomes applications in the field of bioinformatics. The research shall be related to issues of biosciences and/or environmental sciences.” Here, it is not a question of targeting funding as a separate call but bioinformatics is one of the research-political criteria that the Research Council for Biosciences and Environment uses when making its funding decisions. Other corresponding criteria include promotion of researcher mobility and career advancement of young researchers.

In its action plan, the Research Council for Biosciences and Environment states regarding the research posts as Postdoctoral Researcher that, within the September 2012 call, it particularly seeks to invite applications from the field of biological bioinformatics. This aim is based on, for instance, the report The State and Quality of Scientific Research in Finland 2009.

The funding decisions are always based primarily on the review of the research plan and the scientific merits of the applicant. In addition, the research-political criteria adopted by the Academy can also be used as criteria; in this particular case the aim is to promote the development of the field of bioinformatics. As in previous years, the 2012 call for research posts as Postdoctoral Researcher is open to all research fields hosted by the Research Council for Biosciences and Environment, and consequently, the question of whether or not bioinformatics is included in the research plan does not affect the scientific peer review of applications.
