COLLABORATION WITH NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF)

NSF Graduate Research Fellows Program (GRF)

The Academy of Finland offers NSF Graduate Research Fellows contacts with projects run by the Academy of Finland’s Centres of Excellence and Academy Professors. The NSF launched a new international research opportunity within its Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) in autumn 2008. The aim is to encourage Graduate Research Fellows to go on research visits of 3–12 months to the Nordic countries. The aim of the new research opportunity is to enable researchers to build international contacts at an early stage of their careers. Research collaboration should benefit both parties.

The Academy’s role is to facilitate the process. Decisions concerning whether to accept (or not accept) a prospective visiting Research Fellow are made by the host institution, which is also responsible for covering the housing and living costs and for other practical arrangements of visiting NSF Research Fellows. The NSF will cover the salary and other costs of visiting NSF Research Fellows.

Tekes - the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation is also a partner in this project. For more information, please see the Tekes website

Research workshops

Funding applications for US-Finnish research workshops can be submitted through the NSF’s Science of Science and Innovation Policy program (SciSIP). The applicant should be the US party to the workshop.

NSF’s Materials World Network: Cooperative Activity in Materials Research between US Investigators and their Counterparts Abroad

The Academy of Finland is prepared to provide funding for research projects in materials science and technology together with the NSF. The focus will be on collaborative projects made up of two research teams, with one Finnish team and one US team in each. The Finnish teams will submit funding applications to the Academy while the US teams submit funding applications to the NSF for a joint research topic. The teams’ research plans need not be identical, but must include a description of both parties’ contributions to the research.
