Researcher mobility

Applications for mobility grants for research at Japanese universities and research institutes can be submitted in September. The Academy has funded researcher mobility with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) since 1988. Cooperation with the JSPS covers all scientific disciplines.

GRANTS FROM THE ACADEMY OF FINLAND

For researchers

  • awarded for researchers with a PhD for research at Japanese universities or research institutes
  • duration 7–360 days
  • covers living costs and round trip from place of residence in Finland to destination in Japan
  • Grant amounts 2012–2013
  • Special instructions
  • researchers shall take out health insurance for the grant period

For PhD students

  • awarded for travel and living costs in Japan
  • do not cover university fees
  • can be applied for for a maximum of 12 months at a time and for a total of two years
  • Grant amounts 2012–2013
  • Special instructions
  • statement by the supervisor of doctoral dissertation shall be appended to the application, in addition to the appendices listed in the special instructions
  • researchers shall take out health insurance for the grant period

GRANTS FROM JSPS

Fellowships

  • applicants must have received their doctorate within six years prior to 1 April 2013
  • duration 12–24 months, the grant period shall start between 1 April–30 November 2013
  • applied for on the JSPS form (Format 2)
  • invitation from the Japanese host institution (university or research institute) shall be appended to the application
  • reference letter signed by the applicant’s present or previous supervisor (not by the prospective Japanese host)
  • A copy of the certificate of the doctoral degree shall be appended to the application. If the applicant has not yet gained his or her doctoral degree, the applicant shall append a letter by the director of the institute indicating the date when the applicant will officially receive the degree certificate.
  • All documents shall be in two copies in English or Japanese. If the original document is not in English, an English translation of the document shall be appended to the application (translation by the host or applicant accepted)
  • All documents shall be original documents (excluding degree certificate).

JSPS covers the following costs as Fellowship Grants:

  • round-trip from place of residence in Finland to destination in Japan
  • monthly grant of JPY 364,000 (about EUR 3,300)
  • settling-in allowance of JPY 200,000 (about EUR 1,800)
