Sustainable economy

The Academy of Finland’s Research Councils for Biosciences and Environment and Culture and Society have decided to jointly target funding at research on sustainable economy. Funded projects are expected to study different alternatives for the sustainable use of natural resources in the long run, particularly in terms of the steering and regulation of the economy and its correction mechanisms. The funding is targeted at projects that will investigate the preconditions for sustainable economy on a global and national level as well as from the perspectives of companies, communities and individuals. The projects are further expected to foresight foreseeable challenges (e.g. ageing population, climate change, new global structures of the economy and production, food security in developing countries and environmental threats) and to promote the systematic and integrative analysis of the total impacts of the sustainable use of natural resources. The projects will be highly multidisciplinary, and the Academy recommends that they be carried out as consortium collaboration. The Research Councils are prepared to fund the projects with a total of some EUR 4 million.

Those who receive funding within this sustainable economy call can be granted     simultaneous funding for an Academy Project only for compelling reasons.

Funding period

The funding period starts 1 September 2012. As a rule, the funding is granted for four years.
