Neurogenerative Diseases (JPND), Pilot call

Joint Programming is one of the EU Commission’s main initiatives in support of the European Research Area (ERA). It involves building a new approach with the aim of strengthening research funding collaboration and pooling national resources in Europe in the interests of addressing certain specific societal challenges. Joint Programming focuses on urgent European or global challenges that cannot be solved through national measures alone.

The Joint Programme in Neurodegenerative Diseases (JPND) is a European Union member state-led initiative to tackle one of the grand challenges facing Europe today, namely neurodegenerative diseases (incl. Alzheimer’s disease). JPND opened its first call in May 2011under the theme “Neurodegenerative Diseases – a call for European research projects for the optimisation of biomarkers and harmonisation of their use between clinical centres”. The aim of the call is to establish multinational, collaborative research projects that will add value to existing research through addressing novel approaches to improve and harmonise the use of biomarkers in the area of neurodegenerative disorders.

The Academy of Finland will fund projects that have been successful in the call. The Academy’s Research Council for Health has earmarked funding for a maximum of two three-year projects, a maximum of EUR 300,000 each.

How to apply

Please note the non-standard application procedure. More detailed application guidelines and terms are available on the JPND website under Initiatives. The applications shall be submitted via that website. The call is open and the deadline is 5 September 2011. The deadline is non-negotiable.

Finnish applicants shall follow both the international application guidelines and the Academy’s general guidelines, including the guidelines on the acceptable costs of Academy Projects.

The JPND call has two stages. The Academy will request Finnish researchers who have been successful in the international review to submit a separate application in the Academy’s online services. Guidelines will be given at a later stage.

Applicants are requested to contact the contact person at the Academy in advance, if they intend to submit an application to this call.
