Doctoral studies of employed persons
The aim of this form of funding is to promote doctoral studies of persons working within industry, business, research institutes and public administration.
Funding is granted for jointly funded researcher training where the other party is a business company, research institute or an organisation within public administration. The persons conducting research are responsible for the progress of their studies according to a set research plan and they are also expected to have a postgraduate study programme approved by a university. They must also be incorporated into the systematic supervision of the university.
The Academy of Finland will pay the applicant's employer 2,000 euros a month (October 2007 call) towards salary expenses. For special reasons, this funding may also be granted to the applicant, in which case the university that answers for the applicant's doctoral studies will serve as the accounting office.
Funding is granted for a maximum of 1.5 years for purposes of completing a doctoral dissertation. Persons working within business and industry may also be granted funding for an earlier stage of their doctoral studies that significantly advances the research. The same person can be granted funding only once.
The Academy requires that applicants have a contract of employment with their primary employer during the entire funding period and that they have agreed with their employer that they can use at least 50 per cent of their working hours towards working on their doctoral dissertation. If the employment contract is terminated, Academy funding will be discontinued as well.
