Academy Professors
Aim
Applicants for research posts as Academy Professor apply for funding for their own salary for a maximum of five years. The aim of the funding is to facilitate full-time scientific research for internationally leading-edge researchers.
Academy Professors are expected to greatly contribute to the progress of research and establish and develop a creative research environment. The duties also include (without separate compensation) supervision of thesis and dissertation writers in the field and teaching associated with the research (5% of the annual working hours).
Applicant
The applicant is a researcher. Research posts as Academy Professor are intended for leading-edge researchers for full-time research and related tasks. Academy Professors pursue their own research plans, supervise their team and provide guidance to junior researchers.

Funding
The funding towards the salary of Academy Professors is determined according to a monthly salary of EUR 8,713. In addition, the Academy allocates funding for indirect employee costs (28%) and overheads (14.29%, i.e., the funding includes an overheads share of 12.5%).
Those selected to research posts as Academy Professor can – having received the decision on their salary funding – submit a separate application for a research grant for research costs to the relevant Research Council. This research grant can be awarded to cover research costs, salary costs of a research team, and national and international collaboration and mobility.
Funding period
Research posts as Academy Professor are filled for a maximum of five years at a time. Appointment for a second term is possible only on the basis of exceptionally successful activity and a competitive research plan. The funding period starts 1 January 2014 and ends 31 December 2018 at the latest.
Two-stage call
The Academy Professor call has two stages. The Academy’s Research Councils decide who will be asked to submit a full application based on the letters of intent. Full applications are reviewed using international peer review. Decisions on those selected to research posts as Academy Professor and those placed on a reserve list are made by the Academy Board.

How to apply
The deadline is in September The deadline is non-negotiable. Applications are drafted in the Academy’s online services (select Open calls > Academy Professor, letters of intent).
The additional costs model (14.29%, i.e., the funding includes an overheads share of 12.5%) is applied to the overheads in the application for salary costs. Those who have been granted salary funding shall submit a separate application for research costs in accordance with the full cost model. The Academy’s contribution to funding can be no more than 70% of the total research costs.
