Impact assessments conducted
The Academy of Finland is committed to promoting the impact of science and research and to demonstrating that impact. It promotes the interdisciplinarity and diversity of research as well as its capacity for renewal and regeneration by providing funding to research in all fields and sectors. Impact is based on the high scientific quality of research.
Research creates a knowledge base and produces innovations on that basis, enhances welfare and well-being, strengthens education and benefits economic activity. The impacts of research are considered in the long term.
The Academy of Finland has published a report on the internationalisation of Finnish scientific research. The report is part of the review of the state and quality of Finnish scientific research (2009).
The Academy’s assessments of the impacts of research and research funding have been published in its publication series. The Academy issues a review of the state, quality and impact of research in Finland once during the three-year term of its Research Councils. The main focus of the most recent review, SIGHT 2006, was on assessing the impacts of scientific research. The review comprised a comprehensive package of impact reports and assessments, including separate publications by the Academy’s four Research Councils. One of these publications examined impact in terms of research into culture and society:
