International Geoscience Programme IGCP
The International Geoscience Programme (IGCP) improves the interaction and networking between geo-hydro and environmental scientists, for example by means of joint projects, meetings and workshops.
IGCP is a cooperative enterprise of UNESCO and the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and it also works in cooperation with other UNESCO scientific programmes.
IGCP provides several thousands of scientists from about 150 countries with a multi-discipline platform to exchange knowledge. The programme does not fund actual research work, however, the projects selected to the programme annually receive financial support towards organisational costs and in particular towards travel costs of researchers from developing countries. Finland is part of IGCP projects through the participation of universities and research institutes.
IGCP activities in Finland are coordinated by a national committee. Members of the Finnish IGCP National Committee are Professor Kirsti Loukola-Ruskeeniemi (Chair) from Helsinki University of Technology, Research Professor Ilmo Kukkonen from the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) and Professor Timo Saarinen from the University of Turku.
