Antarctic research
Since 1998, the Academy of Finland has allocated funding to research projects within Antarctic research, taking into account the proposals by the coordination group for Antarctic research of the Ministry of Education.
The projects funded by the Research Council for Natural Sciences and Engineering represent strong basic natural science research in the fields of geophysics, geology and meteorology. Basic research provides knowledge that is needed when utilising natural resources in Antarctic circumstances and in assessing environmental changes.
In 2004, funding was granted to projects for a four-year period 2005–2008.
