TKK Professor Visa Koivunen has assembled around himself an active and growing research team, which is part of the SMARAD Centre of Excellence, the Smart and Novel Radios Research Unit. For the past ten years, Koivunen and his team have concentrated on exploring core questions of wireless communications theory and achieved significant new results. For example, Koivunen has developed a simple adaptive method to suppress interference. In 2008 he published a method for processing antenna and sensor signals whereby the necessary optimization can be performed under constraints that were previously thought to preclude the use of effective optimization methods.

The work of Professor Koivunen brings together basic research in theoretical electrical engineering with the study of technologies that are central to facilitating wireless telecommunications, an industry of ever-growing importance to society. He is interested in the problems of wireless data transmission that are most crucial to future advances, such as intelligent dynamic spectrum use through multi-antenna techniques and user interaction. Because of the limited spectrum and the large volume and major role of wireless communications, even minor improvements in the theoretical foundations can have significant economic impact.

Professor Koivunen and his team have the potential to produce highly significant new results in their field.
