Professor Terttu Nevalainen of the University of Helsinki is in charge of the national Centre of Excellence on Variation, Contacts and Change in English and the CoE’s research project on Sociolinguistics and Language History.

Nevalainen is interested in how the English language is used in different contexts. A special focus of interest is to explore variation and change in language use over time. Professor Nevalainen’s contribution to sociolinguistic theory building involves shaping perceptions of how long-term change can be modelled: how English became the language that it is today.

Professor Nevalainen’s interdisciplinary approach is considered to add new theoretical and methodological insights into historical language research and sociolinguistics: she makes good use of corpus research, social history and data mining.
