Academy Professor Martti Koskenniemi's (University of Helsinki) area of the research is international law. His research project studies the role of international law in limit situations and great crises especially (but not only) after 1989. While international law was held inapplicable to such crises during the Cold War, the new "ethical consensus" in the 1990's has extended it to cover also situations that could be characterised as exceptional, even catastrophic.
