Professor Kari Enqvist of the University of Helsinki has a prominent role in two major science projects, CERN’s LHC experiment and ESA’s Planck satellite project. His research interests lie in the area between particle physics and cosmology. Professor Enqvist works at the cutting edge in both fields. The first application stage of these projects will get underway in the next few years, and there is real promise of scientific breakthroughs.

Professor Enqvist is one of the world’s leading figures in his field. If LHC and the Planck satellite produce good observations, he will rank among the absolute elite. The Academy professorship will allow Enqvist to devote his time and energies to scientific work at the most active stage of these major projects. At the same time it will afford greater visibility to the Finnish scientific community in projects in which Finland has invested tens of millions of euros through membership fees and industry contributions.

Professor Enqvist works in a field whose results have universal appeal, particularly if they are popularized. His efforts in popularization have already created growing demand for scientific literature.
