January round of application open in the online services
The Academy of Finland January round of application is now open; applications can be submitted in the online services during 2–31 January. The application deadline is strict. For more information on available funding, go to the press release. The call for applications, with detailed guidelines on how to submit applications, is available on the Academy's website on www.aka.fi/researchfunding > Deadlines and calls.
The January call involves some essential changes.
If an applicant has an ongoing project funded with the Academy's general research grant, he/she can be granted another project to be funded with a general research grant only for very weighty reasons. This applies only to so-called project funding. For example, an applicant receiving research programme funding may also be granted funding within the call for general research grants. Similarly, an applicant receiving a general research grant may be funded through a research programme.
As a rule, the Academy does not grant funding to cover salary costs of responsible leaders of research projects. If the responsible leader or applicant does not hold an office or have an employment relationship, he/she may apply for funding to cover his/her own salary as part of a project funded with general research grants or a research programme project only for special reasons (e.g. returning from abroad) and for a maximum of one year. If the applicant does not hold an office or have an employment relationship he/she shall explain in the application how his/her salary will be covered during the funding period. The research council will take note of the explanation in considering the applicant's chances of leading the project during the funding period. The short and free-form explanation can be included in the research plan under the section for project resources.
The guidelines on consortium applications have been bundled up and electronic submission of consortium application has undergone some changes. The guidelines on applications by consortia, which are mainly formed in research programmes, are available on the Academy's website on www.aka.fi/researchfunding > Application guidelines > Consortium application.
The criteria for postdoctoral researcher funding have been defined more clearly. The postdoctoral researcher's term is fixed, from 1 January 2008 to 31 December 2010. Applicants are required to have completed their doctoral degrees after 31 January 2003. The Academy will only deviate from these two rules for very special reasons (e.g. maternity, paternity or parental leave, military service or non-military service, or chronic disease).
The call for applications is available on the Academy's website on www.aka.fi/researchfunding > Deadlines and calls. It can also be ordered from the Registrar's Office, tel. +358 9 7748 8377 or email kirjaamo@aka.fi.
