The focus of funding transferred to teams comprising researchers with a doctorate
The Board of the Academy of Finland has decided to transfer the focus of the Academy’s key funding instruments. As of the January 2010 call for applications, general research grants will primarily be granted to research teams comprising researchers with a doctorate. The underlying reason is that it is considered a weakness of Finnish research that research is carried out to far too great an extent by doctoral students. A number of studies show that research teams aspiring to high-quality scientific research should primarily comprise researchers who have already gained their doctorates.
The January call for applications is open in the Academy of Finland’s online services during 11–29 January 2010.
The full cost model is applied to the funding of most funding opportunities. The guidelines on how to apply the full cost model and the frequently asked questions regarding the full cost model are available at www.aka.fi/eng > For researchers > How to apply > Full cost model.
The site of research is required to make a commitment to contribute to the funding and administering of a project and to undertake to provide the project with necessary basic facilities. As a consequence of the entry into force of the new Universities Act and the new Act on the Academy of Finland, the Academy has issued new texts for the commitment by the site of research that will apply to certain funding opportunities, such as the general research grants.
In January, letters of intent are invited for a new programme for Centres of Excellence in research. The Centre of Excellence programme provides a unique opportunity for research teams and consortia of research teams to carry out internationally high-quality research with six-year funding.
The January call also involves a call for letters of intent for the Finnish Research Programme on Climate Change (FICCA). Instead of narrowly defined research themes, the FICCA programme focuses on interaction between the environment and society. The projects to be funded under the programme will be determined by the requirement for a genuine multi- and interdisciplinary approach on a broad base.
In January, applications are also invited for targeted funding for basic research on energy efficiency, rehabilitation research, and research on functional mechanisms of new post-genomic proteins and protein complexes.
