ERA-NETs
The ERA-NET scheme is a funding instrument of the EU Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) contributing to the promotion of cooperation between national research programmes and research funding agencies. ERA-NETs network national or regional programmes, support cooperation and coordination of national and regional research programmes, increase systematic exchange of information between programmes and map out obstacles to cooperation. The EU provides funding to cover the coordination and administration costs of the ERA-NET activities of national agencies that fund research programmes. The first ERA-NET call of FP6 was carried out in 2003.
The ERA-NET funding scheme continues in the EU Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). It is possible to apply for funding for new ERA-NET projects but the aim is also to support the existing ERA-NETs. The ERA-NETs of FP6 are encouraged to expand and diversify their forms of cooperation. Through ERA-NET Plus funding, the Commission participates in funding ERA-NET research programmes together with the funding agencies involved in the ERA-NET network.
Several of the ERA-NETs work with a view to opening multinational research calls that will also provide opportunities for Finnish researchers. However, it has to be noted that all ERA-NET partner organisations do not necessarily participate in joint calls.
The Academy has actively participated in capacities within ERA-NETs and been responsible for the preparation of such work related to the Academy’s own operations in Finland. Our expertise in matters such as international cooperation and arranging joint calls has been appreciated in ERA-NET networks.
