Publication guidelines
Objectives of the publication series
The publication series of the Academy of Finland includes studies on science policy, evaluations, reports and policies. The series provides information for different interest groups and spurs science policy discussion.
Submitting a manuscript to the publication series
When authors plan to submit manuscripts to the Academy of Finland publication series, they first have to have the manuscript approved by the Unit Director, who gives his or her statement on the manuscript to be published in the series. Authors should contact the editor-in-chief in good time. The material used in the manuscript must be previously unpublished and it must not have been sent elsewhere to be published.
Contents of the publication
Cover: The cover image and headline typography are planned at the Academy. The editor-in-chief drafts the back cover text.
- Description: The author of the publication fills in the description page. The length of the description text is 500 characters.
Summary: The author of the publication writes a summary as part of the manuscript. The length of a printed summary is usually 5-10 pages and at least 2 pages in smaller publications.
- Layout: All manuscripts are made up at the Academy, which means that they may be submitted in the authors' type and line spacing.
- References and bibliography: References should be written using the author date method, i.e. the Harvard system. References are listed at the end of a piece of work. The list may be titled bibliography or references. In the Harvard System, the references are listed in alphabetical order of authors' names. The reference includes the author's or authors' surname and forename(s), year of publication, title, place of publication and publisher. A citation in the text includes the author's surname, (year of publication and page number(s) if necessary). The source of an image or a table is given in connection to the image or table.
- Language checking: Authors are asked to make sure that the text is thoroughly checked to avoid delays. English texts are sent to Tuulikki Toivonen at the Academy of Finland to be checked.
