How to download

General
Most files available for downloading on the Academy's web pages are in pdf-format and can be viewed with Adobe Acrobat Reader. The office formats rtf, doc (Word), xls (Excel) and ppt (PowerPoint) are also in use, depending on the nature of the document.

Downloading files
When downloading files, you may choose whether to open them directly on the internet or to save them on your computer and open later. The choice is made in the box 'Downloading files' which appears after clicking on the link. If the box does not appear, you have chosen not to get a warning before opening files. If so, you can choose whether to download or save by right-clicking on the link, which will open a regular menu.

Saving files on a disc is useful, when you are unsure of the source's reliability. You can save your work, close all other programmes and scan the file for viruses before opening it.

All files downloadable from the Academy of Finland web pages have been scanned for viruses.

Problems with opening pdf files?
If problems occur (the file does not open, the computer gives an error notification, etc.), it is always useful to update the version of Adobe Acrobat you are using. The latest version is available free of charge at www.adobe.fi. Click 'Get Acrobat Reader' and follow the instructions in order to download and install the programme. After this, you should be able to open files without problems.

Afraid of viruses?
When downloading files from the internet, take care not to use other than reliable sources and to always update your virus protection. Doc, xls and ppt -files downloaded from unreliable sources may sometimes be contaminated with so-called macro viruses. To avoid these (in Word 2000 or Excel 2000), choose Tools >  Macro > Security > Security level > High. Your computer will then only enable macros signed by reliable sources. You do not need macros to read Academy documents.
